Is it true that Jewish women cannot donate their eggs?
Hello there! I’m a 19-year-old girl who is about to start college and I’ve considered donating my eggs to get some cash and pay my PhD later. In my family we’re all Jewish and some women in my community argue that we Jewish people are banned from egg donation in the US for no apparent reason. I would like to know why assuming this is true? If so, it’s so sad 🙁 🙁May 21, 2016 at 9:02 am
No, that is not true. The only thing the ASRM establishes as an additional requirement is addressed to prospective egg donors of Ashkenazi-Jewish origin. In such case, in addition to being medically, psychologically, and genetically screened, they have to be tested for the following:
– Cystic fibrosis (CF) mutation
– Tay-Sachs disease
– Canavan disease
– Familial dysautonomia
– Gaucher disease
These are the only additional requirements the ASRM recommends in case the donor is of Ashkenazi-Jewish origin.
The following post may be of interest: Becoming an egg donor in the USA.
I hope I have been able to help,
