Sperm morphology changes

  1. I have a beautiful little girl which I conceived naturally in my first month of trying. I started trying for number 2 when she was 9 months old. After 10 unsuccessful months, and an all clear from the Gynae on my side, a sperm analysis revealed teratozoospermia, with a 1% normal morphology. All other factors were well above normal. They said my only option was ICSI. I don’t feel that the analysis is correct as it was a student who did it, and it doesn’t seem to add up. Although there is a reason I am yet to conceive again….Can sperm morphology change that drastically in such a short period of time? I am impatiently waiting for a fertility work up at another clinic…

    Dear Natalie mills,

The results of a seminogram can vary after a few months due to a great number of causes such as infectious diseases, medication intake, etc. However, these causes may be temporary, which means they may disappear after some time.

Thus, my recommendation is that, if you don’t want to start a fertility treatment yet, try to ask your andrologist for the prescription of some supplement, and take it during 2-3 months. After that period of time, you can repeat the seminogram to check whether its results have improved. If the results remain the same, you may have to make up your mind whether you wish to start an ICSI or not.

As for the analysis, it should be clear that it is always performed by specialists in assisted reproduction; therefore, there are good reasons to think it was correctly performed, not only because of the afore mentioned reason, but also because the roots of your case.

Bear in mind that the first time you got pregnant within the first month TTC, and now it is a year since you are TTC with no luck so far, which proves there is some problem behind.

    Hope this helps
