A typical menstrual cycle lasts 28 days and ovulation occurs on day 14. Therefore, in this type of cycle the follicular phase lasts 14 days, from the beginning of the menstrual cycle to ovulation.
However, not all women have this typical menstrual cycle and, in fact, the follicular phase is the most variable. This means that a longer or shorter duration of the menstrual cycle will generally be due to a longer or shorter duration of the follicular phase.
