Selling eggs to fertility clinics, can a woman do so?

Hello there, I’m lucy, 26 years old, currently studying at college… I’ve recently lost my job and I’ve heard you can make an interesting amount of money by donating eggs, so I’m interested in selling mine to a fertility clinic, maybe more than one, don’t know how it actually works – that’s why I’m here. Is there any specialist or someone who can explain it to me? I’m interested in knowing how to sell my egg cells for money, and how much would I get paid… I’ve heard the pay is quite interesting and besides I want to ease another woman’s IVF cycle if she needs younger eggs to become a mother… Looking forward to hearing from you soon xx

  2. Dear lucy,

Thanks for posting a new thread. Well, if you’re young (26 years old) and want to become an egg donor, in principle you are very eligible to become so, as you meet the most important requirement: the age.

First of all, I’d like to make it clear that we talk about “egg donation” or “egg cell donation” instead of “egg selling” or similar common references to this altruistic act. One should keep in mind that women who donate their eggs are helping other women achieve their dream of creating a family, and for this reason what they get is a financial compensation for the effort made and any inconveniences caused.

Indeed, to donate eggs the first thing a woman has to do is visiting a fertility center, apply to become an egg donor and undergo all the tests required to qualify as a donor. Once the application is approved, and not until you are properly pre-screened and interviewed, you will be matched with a recipient. The oocyte donation cycle, that is to say, the medical process takes around 3 to 4 weeks, depending on each woman, during which you have to administer self-injections containing hormonal medications that will help your ovaries to produce multiple eggs in a single cycle.

When the specialists determine it is the right time for your eggs to be retrieved (once they are mature enough), you will undergo ovum pick-up (OPU), also known as “follicle puncture”, “egg retrieval”, or “egg harvesting”.

As for the payment, it depends on the country where you are donating. If you’re in the US, moreover, it will depend on the state, as well as on the number of eggs you are able to produce – normally, the larger this amount, the higher the compensation.

I hope I have been able to help,

  4. Hello!

I also want to sell my eggs. I’m from Orange County, California. How much do fertility clinics pay here?

  5. Hi Elaine,

Generally speaking, U.S clinics may pay between $5,000 and $10,000 + expenses. Due to high demand in California, donor might be paid slightly higher, though.

    Hope this helps,

    Best of luck
