    Hello Doctor, my husband has done a semen analysis to have his fertility checked and these are the results, can you help me understand them?

    Microscopic examination:
    Concentration: 110 mi/ml>=20 mill/ml
    type A: 0%
    type B: 51%
    type D: 33%
    progressive (A+B): 51%>50%
    total (A+B): 67%
    progressive motility: 84.15 million

    Morphology:
    normal: 8%
    abnormal: 92%
    head abnormalities: 100%
    middle-piece abnormalities: 10.87%
    tail abnormalities: 4.32%
    teratozoospermia index (TZI): 1.15
    normal progressive motility: 6.7 million

    other results:
    immature forms: 0-1 sperm per field of view
    leukocytes: < 1 million or 20 sperm per field of view
    agglutination: negative
    others: debris ++

    diagnosis: teratozoospermia

    Could someone tell us what are our chances to have a baby with this results? Please, thanks!!

  2. Dear KellyKelly78,

    there is some data missing, such as days of abstinence and the total amount of sperm in the ejaculate. As long as the semen analysis has been carried out after 3-5 days of abstinence, its results will be representative enough.

    After analyzing your husband’s results, in principle you shouldn’t have trouble conceiving naturally. Taking into account that most fertility clinics use the reference values established by the World Health Organization (WHO), your husband has normozoospermia, that is, he has no morphology problems, as from 4% onwards, sperm are considered to be normal by the WHO.

    I’m guessing your fertility center may have used stricter criteria for your semen analysis.

    Best of luck!

  3. Hello KellyKelly78 and everyone reading this!

    My name is Kate and I’d like to share my experience here. I’m 26 and mi hubby 29. Our story began some time ago, when we decided we wanted to have a child. We were TTC naturally but months went by and nothing happened… Ten months later I was terribly sad (almost depressed), so we decided to visit an assisted reproduction specialist. He told us we had to do some fertility tests to check our fertility potential and that’s what we did. Mine showed positive results, but my husband’s said “moderate teratospermia”. My depression went worse you know, and my husband was starting to believe his sperm was definitely useless. After several months crying non-stop, doctor told me to do another test to check my tubes. Results were again favorable (my tubes wasn’t blocked, luckily!) so we went for an IUI. We had like 1% hope we could achieve pregnancy… But luckily I got pregnant with IUI and here I’m, 2 months pregnant 🙂 With this story I want to share my hopes and let you know that nothing is impossible, ladies!!

  4. Hello Sandra, my semen analysis results are very good, doctor say my semen is in perfect conditions, both in terms of motility and morphology. But my question is about my wife, because she stopped using the iud 3 months ago but we still haven’t achieved pregnancy even though we’ve been ttc ever since. What is going on? Should we visit a fertility center or do you think we can get pregnant naturally?

    • Hello paul,

      after stopping using the IUD or any other hormone-based contraception, couples are advised to wait for at least 2 months. A woman’s body needs some time to start ovulating normally again. If you want to achieve pregnancy, my advice is that she talks to her gynecologist in order to get a folic acid prescription.

      Don’t panic, some time is required to become pregnant, yours is a normal situation. Pregnancy is not always achieved at the very first attempt. Keep in mind that couples who don’t suffer from infertility are advised to keep on try for a whole year.

      Best of luck!
