Teratozoospermia can I have a baby naturally

    Hello,

My husband and I have been 8 month trying to have a baby, without success. Lately he did semen analysis and results where this:
    Sperm concentration 8.1
    Total sperm number 27.5
    Progressive motility 9%
    Non progresive 38%
    Immotility 53%
    Sperm morphology 1%

If we try naturally, should we be able to have a baby?

    Thank you

  2. Hello FairyT

According to the results you show, the sperm concentration and morphology of the sperm is altered.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), to be considered a normal sperm sample, it must have at least 15 million sperm per mL of ejaculate or more than 39 million in total. In your case, these values are 8.1 and 27.5 , so they are below. This is what is known as oligozoospermia.

On the other hand, the sperm morphology must be higher than 4% and in your case it is 1%. This is called teratozoospermia.

Moreover, the WHO establishes that sperm mobility should be higher than 40% (progressive and non-progressive) and 32% should move progressively to increase the probability of pregnancy.

If you want to learn more about this topic, you can read more in the following article: What Diseases are Associated with Oligospermia?

If you have been trying to get pregnant for a long time and did not succeed, my recommendation is that you visit a fertility specialist so he can determine the best treatment. In these cases, IVF-ICSI is usually used, as only the same number of sperm and eggs to be fertilized will be needed, so a large quantity is not necessary.

    Hope this has helped you,

    wish you all the best!

  3. Hi

My husband has received his results with diagnosis of astenoteratozoospermia. I would need advice on which fertility treatment would be better in this case. Here are the results:

Microscopic analysis all normal volume 4.00%
    Ph: 7,90
    CONCENTRATION AND MOTILITY

    Progressive motility: a+b: 13.20%.
    Non-progressive motilityc: 2.80%.
    Static: 84.01%.

    Morphology, 2.00%.

    Thanks in advance.

    • Hi Shanya,

If the motility of the sperm is altered and they do not move normally, it is difficult for the egg and sperm to meet.

Specifically said, if the percentage of immobile sperm is more than 75-80%, this corresponds to severe or severe asthenozoospermia. In these cases, the most appropriate approach is IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection, i.e. IVF/ICSI. In this way, the laboratory staff introduces the best selected sperm into the inside of the egg, so that sperm motility is not required.

If you would like to read more about this fertility treatment, I recommend the following article: What is intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)?

      Hope this helps you,

      all the best.

    • I would like some advice on which fertility treatment would be suitable for this semen analysis result:

      Pre-analytical data

      Physical characteristics
      PH (≥ 7.2): 7.9
      Year of birth (≥ 1.5): 2.0
      Viscosity: high
      liquefaction: incomplete
      yellowish color

      Microscopic examination
      Counting (≥ 15M/ml): 28.06
      Total number (≥39M) 56.12
      Vitality (≥ 58%): 67
      erythrocytes: 0
      Round cells (≤ 5M/ml): 0

      Leukocytes (< 1M/ml): 0Non-progressive motility (%) 19 Progressive motility (≥ 32%) 19 motility in total (≥ 40%): 38 Immobile (%) 62 Self-adhesion: noAgggregation: noSperm morphology Normal forms (≥ 4%): 1Anormal forms (%) 99 Teratozoospermia index : 1.5 IP anomalies (%) : 1 Head anomalies (%): 97Tail anomalies (%)_1 Cytoplasmic residues (%): 0Diagnosis: astenoteratozoospermia
