There are some discomforts that are quite common in pregnancy and many women suffer from them, to a greater or lesser extent. One of them is heartburn, which produces a burning sensation in the chest, behind the breastbone and in the throat.
This discomfort is increased in pregnancy due to increased levels of the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the sphincter that joins the oesophagus and stomach. However, the increase in the size of the uterus also causes the stomach to move to a new position, also favouring reflux.
