IVF Spain Donostia is a private clinic that opened in August 2015 and its founder is Dr. Jon Aizpurua. Previously, this clinic was in Onkologikoa, but in 2019 they moved to Avenida Tolosa Hiribidea. If you need information on how to get to the clinic, either by public or private transport, you can access this link.

The team working at IVF Donostia is made up of 12 professionals from different fields: gynecologists, embryologists, nurses, and patient care staff. Concretely, Dr. Elisa Pérez Larrea is the medical director of IVF Spain Donostia; while the laboratory is directed and managed by the embryologists Rebeca Fernández Martínez and María Velasco Álvarez.

Nowadays, besides attending patients coming from Donostia, 50% of IVF Donostia patients come from France due to its proximity and easy connection by the highway.

Furthermore, based on the latest statistics, IVF Spain Donostia has the capacity to perform around 300 cycles of assisted reproduction per year.

The IVF Donostia center belongs to the IVF-Spain Group, which also includes the IVF-Madrid and IVF-Alicante clinics, the main headquarters of the entire group.

Despite only 10 years in operation, IVF-Spain has grown and expanded enormously, which has allowed them to have facilities of 2,000 m2 and more than 80 workers including gynecologists, embryologists, nurses, patient assistants, etc.

Recently, the IVF Spain group has also been awarded the IVF CLINIC AWARDS 2019 in the categories of Customer Service & Communication and Intimacy & Care.

IVF Donostia is located in a modern neighborhood in the university area which is surrounded by green areas. Its facilities are modern and comfy and have all the necessary resources for fertility patients.

Below are details of all areas of the clinic, with the equipment and technology available to perform fertility treatments.

Building and surroundings

As we have already mentioned, IVF Donostia is located in a modern neighborhood in the area of the Universities, and right in front of the Faculty of Education, Philosophy and Anthropology.

All the facilities are distributed in a single space of approximately 500 m2 and a single floor. The last renovation of the building took place in December 2019, so they are completely new facilities.

IVF Donostia only has one single waiting room, but with small spaces separated by woods for greater intimacy and privacy of patients.

Both the entrance to the clinic and its entire interior are adapted for people with limited mobility, as the doors are wide and the corridors throughout the clinic are wide.

Reception and waiting room

The reception of IVF Donostia is right at the entrance of the clinic and has a black counter. This is where Goretti and Silvia work, who attend to patients in both Basque and Spanish. In addition, Silvia also speaks French.

To the left of the reception is the waiting room. It is a large waiting room, but it is also divided into 4 spaces separated by some woods. Each small area of the waiting room has a small table and two sofas. This creates an atmosphere of tranquility and intimacy for patients, along with background music.

In addition, patients have available water bottles, a coffee and tea machine, and chocolates. For entertainment, although waiting time in the room is usually minimal, IVF Donostia has a television, piped music, free WiFi, and, for children, an area with some toys, coloring books, and a small table.

On the other hand, in the waiting room, there is also a window through which patients can observe the laboratory area and its activity.

IVF Donostia has 4 medical consultations. Two of them have their own examination room and gynecological table; while the other two consultations have a shared examination room. All the offices also have washing facilities, soap, and paper dispensers.

The ultrasound machine they have in their offices is the E-Cube, a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine with a screen so that the patient can look at the ultrasound.

There are also two gynecologists working at IVF Donostia who are specialists in assisted reproduction: Dr. Elisa Pérez Larrea and Dr. Estefanía Rodríguez Ferradas. Both doctors attend patients in Spanish, English, and French.

Besides, both Dr. Elisa and Dr. Estefanía are on duty on weekends and holidays in case of having to do any puncture or embryo transfer.

Nursing room

The nursing room is where blood is drawn. It is located to the right of the reception area.

It is a small room and the resources in it are an armchair with armrests and a storage cabinet.

However, the centrifuge for obtaining serum and plasma and the biochemical analysis equipment are located in the andrology laboratory.

Operating room

The operating room and IVF Donostia's recovery rooms and the laboratory area are on the right side of the reception.

The operating room has direct communication with the IVF laboratory through a door that opens automatically and also through a window. Both rooms are designed with special cleanroom materials and both the corners of the wall and the baseboards of the floor are rounded to avoid the accumulation of dirt. The ventilation system has positive pressure. All this guarantees maximum sterility conditions in the surgical area.

In addition, the resources present in this operating room are an operating table, instrument tables, a monitor, a Toshiba ultrasound machine that offers 2D images, an anesthesia administration system (Primus Draeger), a defibrillator, an aspirator, and a trolley. There is also a large screen so that patients can see what is being done at all times in an ultrasound-guided manner.

Therefore, the operating room is equipped with everything necessary to carry out fertility treatment interventions, as well as minor outpatient surgery such as myomectomy, hysteroscopies, biopsies, etc.

On the other hand, the staff present in all surgical interventions performed are the gynecologist, the anesthesiologist, and the nurse, and sometimes the biologist.

IVF Donostia has a single laboratory separated into two areas, the andrology area with 7 m2 and the IVF area with 21 m2. This laboratory area is new, as it was completed in January 2020.

There are two embryologists working in the laboratory who speak Spanish, English, and French. In addition, the embryologist Maria Velasco also speaks Basque. Both embryologists are on duty on weekends and holidays if it is necessary to perform an ovarian puncture or an embryo transfer.

In the following sections, we will comment on the two areas of the IVF Donostia laboratory.

Andrology laboratory

This laboratory is located at the beginning, as soon as you enter the laboratory area through a numerical code and it is where the spermatic analysis and the processing of the seminal samples for freezing are carried out.

The two embryologists from IVF Donostia work here and carry out the following procedures:

As for the material and equipment present in the andrology area, you can find a laminar flow hood, a phase-contrast microscope, two centrifuges, automatic pipettes, a stove, and a refrigerator, that is, everything necessary to carry out the seminal procedures.

In addition, the method for freezing semen samples is slow freezing and sometimes vitrification.

IVF laboratory

The IVF laboratory is next to the andrology laboratory. This room has no windows except for a small one that connects to the sperm sample collection room. Therefore, the light is very dim and the average temperature is about 20-24ºC, which are the necessary conditions for optimal embryo culture.

As for the resources to keep the room completely sterile, we find conglomerate furniture, and the floor bases are rounded so that dirt does not accumulate. In addition, the laboratory has a ventilation system controlled by HEPA filters and positive pressure. Therefore, the whole area has the necessary characteristics to keep the area sterile and free from contamination.

Below, we detail all the material and equipment available at the IVF Donostia laboratory to carry out the assisted reproduction techniques they offer their patients:

  • 1 Laminar flow hood.
  • 3 Heated surfaces.
  • 3 Heated blocks.
  • 2 Anti-vibration tables.
  • 2 Inverted microscopes.
  • 2 Binocular magnifiers.
  • 1 Leica Integra Microinjector.
  • 1 Eppendorf-Nikon Microinjector.
  • 1 Geri Incubator with Time-Lapse Technology.
  • 1 Sandwich type incubator with individual compartments.
  • 2 Conventional Incubators.
  • Embryo and egg cryopreservation banks.

The computer system for the monitoring, identification, and follow-up of biological samples used by IVF Donostia is the Gidget system. The function of this computer system is to serve as a witness to any IVF procedure.

On the other hand, the technique used to freeze eggs and embryos is vitrification, and the method used to biopsy the embryos and analyze them genetically is by laser. Therefore, IVF Donostia has its own laser to perform the biopsy and the two embryologists, María and Rebeca, have experience in embryo biopsy.

Recovery room

In the same corridor as the operating room and the laboratory, there are three recovery rooms for those patients who undergo surgical interventions such as ovarian puncture or testicular biopsy.

Among the 3 rooms, only one has a private bathroom. The other two recovery rooms share a bathroom that has a toilet, a sink, a wall-mounted soap and paper dispenser and a mirror.

The furniture available in the recovery room is as follows:

  • Articulated stretcher.
  • Brown armchair for the companion.
  • Television.
  • Side table.
  • Picture with flowers on the wall.

After each intervention, IVF Donosita offers all its patients a tray with juice, coffee or infusion, and a toast or a cupcake.

Sperm collection room

IVF Donostia has a room for obtaining seminal samples. This room is located at the back of the clinic and connects directly to the laboratory through a small window. This is an advantage for the patients since it is more discreet and avoids having to walk around the clinic with the canister once the sample collection is finished.

On the other hand, the furniture and resources present in these rooms are blue armchairs covered with a towel, a painting, two lamps with warm red light and a television with a video catalog. The TV remote control is packed in a plastic cover in which the patient's name is put and, once he leaves the room, it is discarded.

Egg donation facilities

Any women who want to become an egg donor can also come to IVF Donostia to carry out all the necessary medical and psychological tests, as indicated in the Law 14/2006 on Assisted Human Reproduction Techniques.

If they are accepted as donors, they will have to go to the clinic itself to perform ovarian stimulation and follicular puncture to obtain the eggs. The nursing staff will be responsible for the care and control of the egg donors.

IVF Donostia does not have specific facilities for egg donors. However, the entrance door for egg donors is different from that of patients and there is a separate waiting room. This avoids the possible encounter between egg donors and patients who are going to undergo assisted reproduction treatment.

On the other hand, IVF Donostia carries out the assignment of donors based on physical characteristics and blood group, as established by Law 14/2006 on Assisted Human Reproduction Techniques. The results of the genetic compatibility test are also taken into account.

What does the first visit look like?

The first visit in IVF Donostia is informative and has a total duration of approximately 3 hours, of which half will be with the gynecologist and the other half with the patient care staff.

At this first clinic visit, patients are advised to take all previous medical history, tests performed, analyses, etc. all of which will be evaluated by the doctor.

Currently, this first consultation at IVF Spain Donostia is free and includes ultrasound, that normally costs 200 euros. Additionally, the analysis of the antimullerian hormone is not included and, in the case of international patients, a seminogram and freezing of the sample is recommended, which is also not contemplated in the price of the first visit.

Upon arrival at the clinic, the patient gives all the reports and previous medical tests to the doctor for review and will be waiting in the room in the meantime.

Once the entire medical history has been evaluated, the patients proceed to the consultation with the gynecologist who will perform an ultrasound scan. The doctor will explain the situation the patients are in as well as the different options they have to achieve pregnancy.

Afterwards, the patients are seated in the waiting room until they are given a dossier with all the documentation, estimates, consents and prescriptions. They will meet with the patient care staff for a detailed explanation of all the contents of the dossier, quotes and resolution of doubts.

Finally, the patient care staff takes a tour of the clinic with the patients and after 2 weeks they are called back to schedule a follow-up appointment. This appointment is included in the first informative visit.

IVF Donostia also has the option of making a long-distance first visit free of charge through different video call tools.

Other services

The patients of IVF Spain Donostia have other medical services at their disposal that can be of significant importance in achieving pregnancy, in cases where the intervention of a gynecologist is not sufficient. Below is a list of the different specialties available:

  • Free online psychological support. However, long term therapy sessions will be charged.
  • Urologist.
  • Nutritionist.
  • Geneticist.
  • Immunologist.

All these services are external and are not included in the price of the treatment, except for the urology service and occasional psychological care online.

Apart from this, IVF Donostia has a medical committee for high complexity cases and specialized units constituted by the gynecologists of the whole IVF Spain group.

Success rates

The Spanish Fertility Society is in charge of compiling the results of all the Spanish assisted reproduction clinics every year and making a statistical analysis. In fact, the SEF is the only scientific and independent organization of the clinics that collects and publishes these data in an objective manner.

Although our analysis of this clinic was carried out in 19th October, 2020, we have to indicate that the last report published by the SEF shows the success rates obtained in the year 2018 (National Activity Register 2018-SEF Register).

Normally, there is a delay of about 2 years in the publication of these statistics due to the difficulty in data collection and the controls that are carried out. It should be noted that, to collect data from a gestation achieved in December 2017, we must wait until delivery, which will be approximately in September 2018.

It should also be taken into account that directly comparing pregnancy rates between different clinics can lead to misunderstandings because there are many factors that influence the results, such as the cause of sterility or the particular characteristics of each treatment.

Therefore, the SEF data shown below should be taken as a mere guide. In addition, we recommend reading this article for a better interpretation of the statistics.

    1. Hello,

we’re a couple from the Bordeaux area and looking for a Spanish fertility clinic preferably in the North of Spain. Which center can you recommend us? We were at Aquitaine Santé for a consultation and my wife suffers from early menopause. Our doctor recommended egg donation which is illegal here but not in Spain. However, since the genetic load would be from a different person, we are still having doubts. Could you provide us with more information about this treatment? Or any other options besides egg donation?

Thank you so much for your help…

      • Hello MrandMrs,

in early menopause, there is a loss of ovarian function which can result in infertility. In cases where the ovarian reserve is severely affected, it is possible to get pregnant through egg donation since only high-quality oocytes will be used that come from a young and healthy donor.

Egg donation works like a normal IVF treatment with the only difference that a third-party, in this case, the egg donor, is involved who will undergo stimulation treatment for her subsequent follicular puncture. The obtained eggs will be fertilized in the laboratory with your sperm and finally transferred into your wife’s uterus waiting for the embryo to implant itself. Read the whole details here: How does egg donor work?

I understand your concern about the genetic load of your future baby. However, a study carried out in 2015 at the Fundacion Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad in Spain and Stanford University suggested that is indeed possible for the pregnant woman to pass on some genetic material to the baby throughout her pregnancy.

Concerning your question about fertility centers in Spain, I suggest you have a look at our clinic directory. There, you’ll be able to compare different fertility centers in your preferred area and obtain information about treatments, success rates, reviews, and more.

Should you still have doubts about which fertility treatment or clinic is best for you, you can also fill out our fertility report which provides you with information about possible fertility treatment options, clinics, and a cost estimate.

        Hope this helps,

        wish you all the best.
