Preterm birth, also known as preterm labour, is a birth that occurs before 37 weeks of gestation. Depending on how early the delivery is, the baby is at greater or lesser risk.
The exact cause of preterm birth is unknown. However, there are some factors that increase the risk of delivery before 37 weeks, such as a history of uterine surgery, multiple pregnancies, high blood pressure in the mother, excess amniotic fluid, etc.
