Women of advanced age often have diminished ovarian reserve and/or function. Therefore, they cannot use their own eggs to become pregnant and need to resort to treatments such as egg donation.
This method has become one of the most widely used techniques in assisted reproduction centers and thanks to it, high pregnancy rates are achieved. In an egg donation, a young, healthy, and fertile woman (the donor) donates her eggs to another woman who for whatever reason cannot get pregnant with her own eggs (the recipient). These eggs are fertilized in the laboratory and the resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus of the woman who wants to become a mother.
