Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a complementary technique in in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments. Thanks to PGD (or PGT), it is possible to carry out a better embryo selection at the time of transfer. Genetically altered embryos will be discarded and only healthy embryos will be transferred or vitrified.
All IVF patients can undergo PGD. Nevertheless, there are situations in which this technique is particularly indicated:
- Parents who are carriers of a genetic disease.
- Karyotype alteration.
- Altered FISH.
- Implementation failures.
- Advanced maternal age.
- Repeated miscarriages.
