The main function of progesterone is to make the endometrium receptive so that embryo implantation can take place, and then to maintain the pregnancy until delivery is triggered.
Other functions of progesterone are the enlargement of the mammary glands and thickening of the cervical mucus to prevent the passage of sperm through the cervix once gestation is established.
