What are the risk factors for STDs?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by bacterial, viral or parasitic infections that are transmitted through fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, etc. In addition, STDs can be contracted through contact with wounds or by sharing contaminated syringes.

In any case, those people with an active sexual life who have intimate relations without using protection can contract an STD. Similarly, there are factors that increase the risk of sexually transmitted infections such as, for example:

  • Being between 15 and 24 years old.
  • Have sexual relations with several partners.
  • Having a history of STIs.
  • Abuse alcohol and drugs.

If there is suspicion of having any STI or if you have been in a situation of possible contagion, the best thing to do is to inform your doctor as soon as possible.
