Pain, which medical term is dyspareunia, is the most common symptom of vaginismus. In fact, there exist 4 degrees of severity depending on the level of pain experienced by the patient. As a consequence, all forms of penetration, including intercourse, gynecological examinations (pap smear), and inserting tampons or menstrual cups becomes very painful or even impossible.
