PCOS and pregnancy success rates

    Dear specialist,

My boyfriend and I have been TTC for over a year. I have been using birth control pills for 12 years and when I stopped I only had 5 periods in a whole year. I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) despite being skinny (I weight 110.23 lbs). He recommended me to undergo ovarian hyperstimulation in order to achieve pregnancy.

Apart from that, I had an elective abortion when I was 19, so this wouldn’t be the first time I’m pregnant. It was when I still was free from PCOS and I was with another man.

The thing is I’m not too sure about starting a fertility treatment now. Do you think I should wait to see if I can get pregnant naturally? I’m 34 now.

    Thanks!

  2. Dear Mariah,

I understand you are in a state of mental distress but your gynecologist is right and you should proceed as indicated by the expert. He is the one who knows better your medical history; therefore, he knows what your chances are.

I suggest that you read the following article to get more info about PCOS: What Is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS?

    Wishing you the best!

  3. Hey, I was 230 pounds a few months ago and then I started limiting my portion size and doing physical exercise and guess what… I went down to 190! Just after achieving that I found out I was pregnant so now I’m totally happy… I’m 11 wks pregnant now. So, girls, diet is very important if you suffer from PCOS! 😉 Keep fighting!

    • PCOS can be so funny sometimes… listen to my case. I’m 40 now, right? I have a son and a daughter, the former is 12 and the latter is 10. Both pregnancies were unwanted mainly because I’ve been suffering from PCOS for a long time and I was totally hopeless. I hate PCOS! By the way, I’m looking for somebody who can tell me about any supplement or remedy that works best for relieving the symptoms of PCOS. Thanks!

  4. Hi Mariah
Let me start by saying that I am not a specialist, but I am convinced that you should wait for some time before you resort to ovarian hyper stimulation. I have an aunt who was diagnosed with PCOS 8 years ago. Her doctor used to put on treatment to help make her periods regular but did not succeed. At some point, she told me that she had been put on metformin, but still, she was unable to conceive. While she was still learning and preparing herself for the procedure, she noticed that her breasts had started swelling. She went for pregnancy tests, and the doctor told her that she had tested positive and she was pregnant. In July of 2015, she miscarried, and this was attributed to PCOS. She sought treatment, and she was put on further medication. She conceived in May last year and gave birth to a bouncing baby boy in February 2017. I visit her regularly, and I can assure you that the boy is doing pretty well. So don’t give up girl, keep on trying at 34, you still have the time, and a miracle will happen soon. If it doesn’t work, go for IVF.
