How many embryos are usually transferred in IVF?

Do IVF doctors always transfer multiple embryos or do they sometimes transfer a single embryo? How do they determine when to do what?

  2. Hi komo,

Experts recommend that, if your embryos have made it to blastocyst and their quality is good, a single embryo transfer is done on the first attempt. In case it fails after the first cycle, your doctor may consider transferring two embryos.

However, the final decision is in the hands of the patients, who oftentimes decide to transfer two embryos or more the first time, without taking into account the potential risk of multiple pregnancy.

    I hope this helps,

  3. I suppose this depends on a clinic/dr. They may put back from 1 to 3 embryos at a time. And this purely depends on the case. The IVF doctor’s expertise in performing embryo transfer ranks as one of the most important factors that will determine IVF outcome. Good quality embryos are those whose cells continue to divide at a regular and predictable rate. (Known as such that within 72 hours of fertilization they contain 6-9 cells and within 5-6 days develop into blastocysts.) Only these embryos are the ones that are most likely to be ‘competent’ in IVF. There are several confounding considerations in determining how many embryos to transfer at a time:
The number of embryos that might safely be transferred per IVF procedure should be governed by the age of the egg provider. So, while it would be reasonable to restrict the number of high grade embryos transferred to a younger woman to two, the same restriction would be inappropriate and unreasonable in the case of a woman in her 40’s receiving embryos from her own eggs. Then embryos’ grade is taken into consideration. Also the stage of embryos’ development by the time of the transfer must be taken into account. The reason for this is that blastocysts (5 or 6 day) are far more likely to propagate pregnancies than the earlier (day 2-3) ones. Again, it’s said fewer blastocysts need be transferred at a time. It is important for a woman to be relaxed during the embryo transfer. Because many of the hormones that are released during times of stress can cause the uterus to contract.
We’ve just endergone ET with donor egg overseas. I’m 39 yrs old. Passed 2 ivf cycles with oe. Whilst both cycles my right ovary never responded to treatments. I started ivf#3 with AMH 3%, dr told we’d better move on with donor egg. We agreed to put back 2 nice 5day blasts. Got BFP, waiting for the coming scan.

  4. It depends on the case. For women aged 40+ it’s more likely to be the double transfer. But if it’s A grade 5day blast they’ll probably do a single transfer. If your Dr feels positive about placing back 2, then it’s purely your decision whether to agree or not. You should consider well whether you’re ready to have multiples in case things work out. We did both singles and doubles. Our last successful cycle they transferred 2, but only one survives. So the decision is quite intricate. Good luck.

  5. Congrats, MillieG! I’ve just shared this on another thread. How many embryos will be transferred? The number of embryos transferred is typically based on the age and number of eggs retrieved. Since the rate of implantation is lower for older women, more embryos are usually transferred. except for women using donor eggs. Most doctors follow specific guidelines to prevent a higher order multiple pregnancy – triplets or more – and in some countries, legislation limits the number of embryos that can be transferred at once. (In ukraine, for example, it’s 3 embies at a time) So one should make sure they agree on the number of embryos that will be transferred before the transfer procedure. multiple pregnancy poses health risks for a prego and her babies. In some cases, fetal reduction can be used to help a woman deliver fewer babies with lower health risks. Pursuing fetal reduction, however, is a major decision with ethical, emotional and psychological consequences. So all these aspects should be thoroughly evaluated in each particular case.

  6. About half of IVF procedures in the U.S. involve the transfer of two embryos, 23% involve three, and around 10% involve four or five embryos. Close to 1 in 3 IVF births involves twins. 60% of IVF-related twin deliveries were preterm, compared to around 11% of single deliveries from single-fetus pregnancies.
