Hey, my name is Emma and i’ve just had two embryos transferred via egg donation. After the ET doc told me I could come back home, but hasn’t given me an appointment for monitoring how the embryo evolves. Am I supposed to take a pregnancy test within 2 weeks and that’s all? How normal is this? Fellow recipients have told me they had to go for various U/S to see how it goes and some told me they did some tests in the meantime. Should i let luck determine it? Don’t understand…May 15, 2016 at 10:39 am
The way your doctor has proceeded is right, since there’s no need for monitoring during the two-week wait (2WW). Keep in mind that by this time, the embryo is still too small, only visible under a microscope. This means that, even if you had an ultrasound scan done, nothing would be seen.
Besides, hCG production starts after embryo implantation and not earlier, but it doesn’t reach detectable levels up until 2 weeks after fertilization. This is the reason why blood tests are not carried out during the 2WW, since you are likely to get a false negative result.
Even though it may turn out to be a tiresome period of time, it is indeed a necessary pre-pregnancy test step. I wish you the best of luck!
