I’m undergoing egg donation and I’ve just been done the embryo transfer. It has a 8-cell, grade B+ embryo… The doctor told me it was perfect, almost a dream come true, so I guess it has great chances of implanting! I guess since it’s via egg donation and my partner’s seminogram was perfect, I have plenty of reasons to believe I got pregnant, don’t I? Anyhow, I’m taking progesterone medications 3 times a day, I’m taking vaginal suppositories at night but I find it quite uncomfortable, especially because I’m spotting quite often… I was wondering if I could switch to taking progesterone by mouth, only if it were possible…
Thanks very muchNovember 29, 2015 at 10:56 am
As you said, the embryo you’ve been transferred is of optimal quality. Besides, taking into account that it comes from a healthy donor and the results of the seminogram show normal semen results, your case can be considered to be of good prognosis.
Hormone fertility drugs are indicated to improve chances of embryo implantation, since thanks to them your endometrium gets ready for it. The aim is to achieve the adequate endometrial thickness, which will make it more receptive for implantation. Progesterone is one of such hormone medications, usually indicated for IVF embryo transfer, either in cases where donor eggs are used and when own eggs are used as well.
Nevertheless, progesterone has some side effects, especially if taken by mouth. Bear in mind that symptoms are to be experienced either if oral or vaginal progesterone is taken, but if you move from vaginal route to oral route, symptoms such as somnolence, dizziness and nausea are rather frequent. This is the reason why it is usually vaginal progesterone is the indicated route, even though it is more uncomfortable.
Be it as it may, it is up to you, and if you have made up your mind, you can ask your doctor for further advice or even try for a few days. However, as I said, usually the recommended it to take vaginal progesterone.
