Post HSG dye test side effects and precautions

    Ms. Anderson

    Hey!
    I’m new to this forum…
Just started with the whole test thing to see what’s the problem as we’ve been TTC for 1 year but no BFP has come out yet and I’m 35.
I’ve done some fertility tests but not my Doc asked for an hysterosalpingography and I’m really afraid
I read that the side effects involved are too many and I almost said no, I consider myself a very sensitive person.
My threshold of pain is super low.
At times I want to stop all this and say no to becoming a mother.
I’m very afraid of the pain. They say HSG pain is a period-like sharp pain. Since my first ever period, the pain I feel with my periods is almost unbearable. I’ve visited my doctor many times and she says there’s no apparent cause (It’s not endometriosis).
I’ve read quite a lot about HSG and it terrifies me… I don’t understand why do I have to suffer like this just to bring a child into the world…. I feel it’s unfair.
Honestly, I’d be very grateful if you could share your experience, as no one surrounding me is able to tell me how it feels.
    Thanks!

  2. Dear Ms. Anderson,

I’m afraid that common side effects of hysterosalpingography (HSG) are pain and discomfort, due to the insertion of the dye fluid through the vagina, but it’s not an unbearable pain. The good news is that a percentage of women just feel a light pressure on the abdominal area, without pain. So, as you shall see, even though it is considered a more or less painful technique, is varies from woman to woman.

So, for this reason, my advice is that you try to stay as calm as possible before, during, and after the test. By doing this, pain and discomfort will decrease, and HSG will finish faster than expected.

    I hope this helps,

    Best

  3. Hi there. Often times the side effects mentioned are the worst case scenarios. You would be surprised to find how rare they really are. The possibility of pain is there of course. However, it usually goes away within an hour or less. Don’t overthink it. Just go for it.
