Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is an assisted reproductive technique which is applied in the following cases:

    • One or both members of the couple are carriers of any inherited genetic disorder.
    • One or both members of the couple are carriers of some genetic abnormality. For instance, translocations, chromosomal inversions, etc.
    • Repeated failure of several conventional in vitro fertilisation or ICSI cycles.
    • Repeated embryo implantation failure.
    • Repeated miscarriage

  • Advanced maternal age: the percentage of genetically abnormal embryos increases as women get older. Among women older than 35 years old, 34% of the good morphology embryos are aneuploid. In women over 40, 52% of the good morphology embryos are aneuploid (aneuploidy is a condition in which the chromosome number is wrong, the common is 46, XX or XY).
  • History of previous aneuploid pregnancy.
  • Male infertility requiring Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) or Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE): these procedures are indicated in cases where no sperm are obtained with the ejaculate (azoospermia).
