Luveris is a gonadotropin. This medicine is prescribed to women going through a fertility treatment during the phase of controlled stimulation. It’s recommended when there are low levels of the LH hormone, which is required during the natural ovarian cycle. These women present a LH serum level lower than 1,2 UI/l.
This medication is to be injected 75 UI/ml. It can be acquired as a solvent substance. It’s a luteinising recombinant hormone (LH), which means that is synthesised in the laboratory through genetic engineering techniques. As a result its purity is higher, its administration more specific and it adapts to the needs of every patient.
Its active ingredient is lutropin alfa, although it contains other substances as excipients such as: sucrose, disodium phosphate dihydrate, monosodium phosphate monohydrate, polysorbate 20, methionine, nitrogen. For adjusting the pH concentrated phosphoric acid and sodium hydroxide was used. As solvent: water for injection.
It can be purchased in different ways:
- Packaging x1 liophilised vial with one vial of solvent.
- Packaging x 3 liophilised vials with three vials of solvent.
- Packaging x 10 liophilised vials with 10 vials of solvent.
How to use Luveris
The doctor will be the one adjusting the exact doses, since it must be adapted to the response of each patient. An ultrasound will be carried out to follow the development of the follicles size to see if an adjustment of the medication is needed. Estrogenic blood levels are also checked.
Its administration is through subcutaneous injections. Follow your doctor’s and health care staff’s instructions to use it at home.
Read the leaflet carefully, wash your hands and prepare the material on a clean surface:
- One vial of Luveris powder.
- One vial of solvent.
- Needle for mixing the powder and the solvent.
- Thin needle for the subcutaneous injection.
- Gauzes with rubbing alcohol.
Remove the protective cover of the vial with solvent and the needle for mixing and extract all the content from the solvent vial. Lay the syringe on the table, avoiding the contact of the needle with any surface. Remove the protective cover of the vial of powder Luveris and insert all the solvent. Without extracting the needle move it slowly (without shaking it).
Extract the syringe and make sure that the powder has dissolved completely and that there’s a homogeneous solution. Holding the needle with the plunger facing down, change the needle for mixing for the thin needle for the injection. Once the syringe is ready you must inject the dose of the medicine, checking first that there are no air bubbles.
Clean with the gauze with rubbing alcohol the area where you are going to inject the medicine, pinch the skin, insert the needle and the medicine. Once you’ve inserted all the Luveris solution, extract the needle carefully and throw away all the material used.
This medicine can’t be used on women that manifest:
- Allergy or hypersensitivity to gonadotropins or any of the excipients.
- Carcinoma in the ovary, uterus or breasts.
- Alteration in the size of the ovaries or cysts in women that don’t suffer from polycystic ovary disease.
- Gynaecological bleedings due to unknown cause.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
