Fragmented DNA in sperm

Since 50% of infertility cases have their origin in the male partner, evaluating all the sperm parameters prior to starting a fertility treatment is essential.

Some sperm disorder cannot be detected using a basic semen analysis, as in the case of sperm DNA fragmentation. When specific test to examine this disorder are performed, DNA fragmentation is the cause of infertility in 25% of the cases.

Causes of damaged sperm DNA are varied, but the most common ones include high scrotal temperature, air pollution, infections, and tobacco consumption. All of them cause oxidative stress in the sperms, which leads to sperm DNA fragmentation.
