Does vitamin D level matter for egg preservation?

By Katharina Spies M.D. (gynaecologist).

The link between vitamin D and fertility is a topic of growing interest, particularly in the context of fertility preservation treatments in assisted reproduction. While research on this subject is still ongoing, there are indications that the level of vitamin D could play a significant role in women's reproductive health.

Vitamin D is essential for maintaining bone health and hormonal balance in the body. Additionally, it has been observed to play a role in the function of the immune system and inflammation, which could influence reproductive system health. Evidence suggests that low levels of vitamin D might be associated with a decrease in ovarian reserve and an increased risk of reproductive disorders.

In preliminary studies, women with adequate levels of vitamin D have been observed to respond better to fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or egg preservation. However, it is crucial to remember that the relationship between vitamin D and fertility is complex, and not all women will experience the same benefits by correcting their vitamin D levels.

Since vitamin D plays a role in overall health and can influence fertility preservation, it is important for women considering assisted reproduction treatments to assess their vitamin D levels. This way, their assisted reproduction specialist can provide personalized recommendations to optimize their reproductive health.
