Is letrozole used for ovarian stimulation?

By Silvia Azaña Gutiérrez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).

Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor drug. This means that the drug blocks the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting androgens into estrogens. Therefore, estrogen production is reduced.

Since estrogens exert negative feedback on the hormonal regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis, decreasing estrogens reduces this negative feedback and, consequently, increases the production of FSH and LH. In this way, it can be used to stimulate the ovary as an ovulation inducer.
