What are the causes of infertility at age 40?

By Silvia Azaña Gutiérrez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 11/28/2025

Silvia Azaña, embryologist at inviTRA, tells us about the main causes of fertility problems at age 40:

The main cause of infertility at 40 years of age is precisely the age factor. In women, the quantity and quality of the oocytes diminish as age advances, which can complicate the successful conception of a pregnancy. In the case of men, at the age of 40, there is not as marked a decline in fertility as is observed in the case of women, but the overall semen quality does indeed decrease.
