A number of couples have no alternative but to turn to donor sperm to have a baby. The causes behind it are usually poor sperm quality or the presence of diseases that are likely to be inherited by offspring.
In Croatia, assisted conception is only available for heterosexual couples, regardless of whether own or donor reproductive cells are used.
