During the 17th week of pregnancy, which is part of the fifth month of gestation, one of the most significant changes is the appearance of vernix caseosa. This is a fatty substance that coats the baby's body.
The main function of this layer of fat is to protect the baby's skin from irritation caused by amniotic fluid and to prevent dehydration. The vernix caseosa usually remains on the baby's skin until delivery, although not all babies are born with this layer.
