Treatment of polyhydramnios

After a diagnosis of polyhydramnios, i.e. when there is an increased amount of amniotic fluid in the pregnancy, the woman will have frequent check-ups. In addition, if the cause of the polyhydramnios is known, the appropriate treatment will be applied.

In certain circumstances, the specialist may suggest that the woman undergo amnio-drainage to reduce the volume of amniotic fluid by aspiration. Similarly, some medications may also be used, although their use is limited because of the side effects they may have on the baby.
