Depending on the characteristics of the cry, the infant may be trying to communicate physical or emotional distress. For example, if the baby cries intensely and rhythmically, it is probably because he is hungry or thirsty.
On the other hand, if the baby's crying is sluggish and the baby rubs his or her eyes, the baby is probably sleepy. Similarly, the baby's cry may be disconsolate, shrill or high-pitched. However, under no circumstances should you lose your temper when your baby cries and it is important to remain calm and try to comfort your little one.
