Umbilical cord blood contains a large number of hematopoietic stem cells, which are the precursors for forming all types of blood cells. In addition, the umbilical cord contains mesenchymal stem cells capable of differentiating into virtually any tissue.
Therefore, the storage of these stem cells can be of great use in curing certain diseases, such as leukemia, for example.
