Can hysterosalpingography cause changes in premenstrual symptoms and/or menstruation?

By Elizabet Henzenn M.D. (gynaecologist).

Nowadays, radiological diagnostic techniques such as hysterosalpingography (HSG) are increasingly safer and do not cause discomfort to patients. The technology and experience of the professionals are fundamental when carrying them out. The radiologist will explain the procedure step by step so that you can carry out the medical test to diagnose the tubes with peace of mind.

Hysterosalpingography is an X-ray that evaluates the tubes, and as these are not visible in a conventional X-ray, it requires the administration of a liquid contrast. This liquid must be introduced through the cervix and this may cause a slight sensation of discomfort for the patient during the procedure.

When asked if it alters menstruation, the answer is no. It should not alter the cycle. It should not alter the cycle, as the ovaries are not compromised. It is true that many patients tell me that they have experienced premenstrual discomfort at certain times and this may be due to the minimal passage of the contrast liquid in the peritoneal cavity. The liquid used is completely safe, as in any radiological procedure with contrast, but it could explain why the period after the study is somewhat more uncomfortable than usual.

If the findings of this study provided any information about the uterus or any lesion, it could also happen that the subsequent period is different. In no case should these sensations or symptoms continue and the first thing you should do is consult your gynaecologist to look for any additional cause.
