Is a pregnancy with fibroids more risky?

By Silvia Azaña Gutiérrez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 03/15/2022

Yes. When a woman with uterine fibroids becomes pregnant, the size of the fibroids can increase during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, this does not happen in all cases.

In addition, fibroids could lead to an increased risk of certain obstetric complications. Among them, we can mention the following:

  • Spontaneous abortion, especially in the case of submucosal fibroids.
  • Intrauterine growth retardation.
  • Problems with the placenta, such as placenta previa.
  • Abnormal presentations of the fetus.
  • Premature labor.
  • Delivery by caesarean section.

Thus, fibroids can impede the proper development of pregnancy. Therefore, the specialist must perform a greater control of the pregnancy when the woman presents fibroids, to avoid the appearance of these complications.
