Is sperm washing only performed in patients with HIV infection?

By Silvia Azaña Gutiérrez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 09/26/2025

Silvia Azaña, an embryologist at inviTRA, tells us in this video if sperm washing is only performed in patients with HIV infection:

No. Semen washing can be performed in serodiscordant couples where the man is HIV positive, but it can also be effectively performed for hepatitis B and C viruses.
In any case, the primary aim of seminal washing is to significantly reduce and minimize the risk of transmitting the infection to the partner during the pursuit of pregnancy.
