Is there a risk of multiple pregnancy using artificial insemination?

By Silvia Azaña Gutiérrez B.Sc., M.Sc. (embryologist).
Last Update: 03/10/2026

When artificial insemination is performed, hormonal drugs are used to mildly stimulate the ovary and achieve the development of one or two ovarian follicles. Due to this, if the ovulation of more than one egg occurs, the possibility of a multiple pregnancy increases, as these eggs could be fertilized by sperm following the artificial insemination.

For this reason, ovarian stimulation in artificial insemination is mild and low doses of hormones are used. If more ovarian follicles than desired develop, the artificial insemination would be canceled due to the high risk of a multiple pregnancy.
