The main reasons why UK patients in need of gamete donation or surrogacy travel abroad for IVF is related to the cost of treatment and the fact that there is a shortage of egg and sperm donors in the UK.
Since 1 April 2005, donors can be known to the children born as a result of their donation once he or she turns 18. This is the reason why the is a shortage of donors in the United Kingdom.
