What is breast engorgement?

Breast engorgement is a fairly common condition when breastfeeding is chosen. This usually occurs in the first weeks postpartum and what happens is that the mammary gland is saturated with both milk and tissue fluid. The obstruction in venous and lymphatic drainage impedes the normal flow of milk, increasing the pressure in the milk ducts and alveoli.

As a consequence, the mother's breasts become swollen and edematous. This situation is quite painful for the woman and there are several ways to alleviate it, although the first approach would be to change the position for breastfeeding the baby.
