A multiple pregnancy obtained by assisted reproductive techniques will generally result in the birth of twins. Regardless of whether the multiple pregnancy was achieved by artificial insemination (AI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), the embryos come from several eggs that were each fertilized with a different sperm. This is why twin siblings will look like siblings born in different births. In addition, twin siblings can even be of different sexes.
Despite this, it is possible that, once the assisted reproduction technique has been performed, an embryo may divide naturally, resulting in the birth of identical twins.
