What is oophorectomy?

Oophorectomy is a surgical intervention that consists of the removal of one or both ovaries in women, receiving the name of unilateral and bilateral receptive oophorectomy.

Ovarian removal can occur for many reasons. Some of them are discussed below:

• Appearance of an abscess, that is, a bag filled with pus in the ovaries.
• Ovarian cancer.
• Presence of cysts or benign tumors in the ovaries.
• Ovarian torsion.

This surgical intervention is relatively simple and, therefore, does not pose significant risks to women. However, there may be side effects as in any other surgical procedure. Some women have suffered bleeding, infections, damage to nearby organs, etc. after undergoing an oophorectomy, although this is unusual.
