Semen consists of 5% spermatozoa and 95% seminal plasma, which is mainly derived from the secretions of the seminal vesicle and prostate.
The seminal vesicle contributes 65% of the volume of semen, while the prostate is responsible for approximately 25%. The urethral and bulbourethral glands contribute 1% with a lubricating secretion.
It is all these secretions that give sperm its characteristic consistency, thick after ejaculation and then more liquid.
