3D ultrasound offers numerous advantages, since the sharpness of its image makes it possible to diagnose fetal alterations quite easily. However, like any other technique, 3D ultrasound has some drawbacks.
For example, it is important to obtain a good 2D image beforehand, otherwise the three-dimensional image will not be of good quality. In addition, the time required for the scan can be long, especially if the staff is not trained or if the fetus is moving.
Another disadvantage of 3D ultrasound compared to traditional ultrasound is that it is more expensive.
