The causes of polyhydramnios can be varied, although they remain unknown in about half of all pregnancies. The main causes of excess amniotic fluid include:
- Gestational diabetes.
- Multiple pregnancy.
- Fetal anemia, such as that produced by Rh incompatibility.
- Alterations in the baby.
- Fetal infection.
If polyhydramnios is severe or occurs early in gestation, there is an increased risk that certain complications may occur.
