Michelle Emblenton, biochemist at inviTRA, tells us about how to detect low ovarian reserve by means of an analysis:
Yes, a hormonal analysis is a very important tool in looking at the ovarian reserve, and we can measure different hormones. One of these is follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which needs to be measured at the start of the cycle. We can also look at progesterone levels in the second half of the cycle. But perhaps one of the most interesting hormones to look at when looking at the ovarian reserve is the antimullerian hormone (AMH). The levels of this hormone do not vary according to the time of the month, so this test can be performed at any time in your cycle. Basically, the higher the level of AMH that you have in a blood test, the better your ovarian reserve. We see the levels of AMH tapering down as a woman increases in age along with the ovarian reserve, so this is one of the key markers that they will look for if testing your ovarian reserve by a hormonal analysis.
