The first trimester combined screening consists of performing a blood test during the 10-11th week to measure two substances, Bhcg (human gonadotropin hormone) and PAPP-A (pregnancy-associated plasma protein A).
Subsequently, in week 12-13, an ultrasound scan is performed to study ultrasound markers such as nuchal fold (nuchal translucency), nasal bone, ductus venosus.
All these data are entered into a computer program which also takes into account other correction factors such as weight, height, age of the patient, whether gestation has been achieved by in vitro fertilization techniques, if there is a history of diabetes .....
The triple screening test determines a cut-off point for the risk of chromosomal abnormalities. It does not indicate whether the baby has problems, it only indicates a probability of having them.
