Egg donor trying to get pregnant

    Hello all,

I recently completed my egg donation on 9/23. My husband and I decided to immediately try and get pregnant ourselves. Today after work I took a HPT and it was positive. Does anyone know if it’s just from the hormones? What are our chances of getting pregnant immediately after donating?

  2. Dear Sophie1025,

It is not advisable for egg donors to become pregnant while on medical treatment for egg donation, be it before, during or right after the cycle. First, because if some follicles weren’t aspirated, you are at risk of getting pregnant with multiples.

On the other hand, if you had all your eggs retrieved after the ovum pick-up process, pregnancy cannot occur as there is no egg left to be fertilized. In short, the best is to wait for your next menstrual cycle and then start trying to conceive.

As far as the HPT you took, it may be a false positive result due to the hormones (Ovitrelle medication), you are right. The general recommendation is to wait for around 15 days after egg donation and then repeat the pregnancy test if your period has not started by then.

In conclusion, from the very moment follicle puncture for egg collection is performed till your next menstruation, unprotected intercourse is unadvisable because you’re at risk of getting pregnant with multiples and ovarian torsion, too. After your next menstruation, you can return to your normal sexual life without risks.

Should you have any further doubt, do not hesitate to ask.

    All the best
