my husband and I are going to start the surrogacy process in Russia, specifically in Moscow. The problem is, a few years ago I had cancer and had to treat myself with chemotherapy, so apart from being unable to get pregnant due to a hysterectomy, I have no choice but to use donor eggs now.

I’ve been told there are very good donors, but I’m afraid all of them are going to be blonde, blue-eyed women because most Russian women have that typical physical features… My physical appearance is more like the opposite thing, in fact I’ve got curly brown hair, and my eyes are brown, too.

I know physical appearance is not the most important thing in the world, but I’d like my son or daughter to take after me and my husband if possible. My conclusion to this is that I would feel way better if I could choose the donor myself.

Is it possible in this country? It would be ideal for us!

  2. Dear Ashely,

firstly, it should be clear that Russian law on this subject make it clear that two types of gamete donation are allowed: known donation and anonymous donation.

Generally, the most common one is the latter, that is, anonymous egg donation. In this case, it is the fertility clinic or egg donor agency who chooses the donor who resembles the mother’s physical characteristics. Apart from verifying the compatibility between blood types, other features such as height, hair and eye color, etc. are taken into account as well. Even though the specialists are the ones selecting your donor from a database, you can get some information regarding the characteristics of your donor.

As for known egg donation, it is true that it is allowed in Russia, but it’s used to a lesser extent. Should you have a preference for this type of donation, you should keep in mind that there must be some type of relationship, either because she is a relative or a close friend. Not every fertility clinic recommends this type of donation. In case you were particularly interested, my advice is that you tell your fertility clinic.

    Best wishes!
