What does Hymen mean?

By (embryologist).
Last Update: 02/12/2019

The hymen is a thin, elastic membrane located at the entrance to a woman's vagina from birth. Normally, the hymen does not cover the entire opening of the vagina, but has holes for menstrual blood to pass through.

The hymen usually breaks and disappears at the first sexual intercourse of the woman after successive penetrations, although it may also break in virgins who practice sports or with the introduction of tampons.
