Factors limiting the success rate of IVF with sperm donors

The most important factor for the likelihood of success of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with donor sperm is the woman's age, but it is not the only factor. Other factors that also influence the success of IVF with donor sperm include the following:

  • Uterine characteristics.
  • Embryo culture conditions.
  • Fertilisation technique.
  • Process with vitrified embryos.
  • Number of embryos transferred.

Although the number of embryos transferred is a limiting factor for the success of IVF, it is true that more and more fertility centres are opting for the transfer of a single embryo. This reduces the possibility of a multiple pregnancy and the consequences that this type of pregnancy can have.
