A mosaic embryo refers to an embryo that contains both healthy and altered cells. Therefore, in the mosaic embryos there are two different cell lines, one of them being chromosomally altered.

The main cause of embryonic mosaicism is poor chromosome separation when embryonic division occurs. Mosaic embryos have the ability to implant in the uterus and achieve an evolutionary pregnancy. Nevertheless, the specialist will be the one in charge to evaluate if to transfer a mosaic embryo according to the characteristics of each patient.
