What is orchiectomy?

Orchiectomy consists of the removal of one or both testicles in men. It is a simple intervention and can be:

• Total: In addition to the testicles, the epididymis and a portion of the testicular cord are also removed.
• Partial: Only the testicles are removed.

When the testicles are removed, there is a decrease in the production of testosterone since it is where the greatest amount is produced. Another consequence of orchiectomy is a decrease in libido and can also cause impotence.

Although this testicular procedure does not require hospitalization, there may be a minimal risk of bleeding, infection, or damage to nearby structures. However, these complications are not common.
