Functional ovarian cysts are produced by the ovary in a normal menstrual cycle and are the most common. These functional cysts can be of two types:
- Follicular cysts: if the follicle has not ruptured for ovulation.
- Corpus luteum cysts: if fluid accumulates in the corpus luteum.
Both types of cysts usually resolve on their own. In addition, there are other types of non-functional ovarian cysts such as cystadenomas, endometriomas, and dermoid cysts.
